Still hanging in there

Baby is still inside, and I'm still not feeling much indication that he wants to come out any time soon. Tonight is our first childbirth class. It's every Monday for the next 4 weeks, which will bring us right up to the cusp of 34 weeks.

So, things seem to be going OK. It's just really annoying not being able to lift anything heavy.

  1. It's VERY annoying to not be able to lift anything, or do anything involving sketchy chemicals! This is putting a major damper on my home improvement projects. Matt doesn't even want me to paint with low-voc paints, but I plan to ignore him on that one.

What kind of birth class are you taking? We are taking some possibly wackadoo Birthworks class (it leans towards natural childbirth but isn't as crazy militant about it as some other types of classes, from what I can tell) starting at the end of the month. I had to get in early since all the other classes I found start in January and end after my due date.

  3. k, the class we're taking is just the one the hospital offers. Supposedly it's heavily Lamaze-influenced, but not an official Lamaze (TM) class. I think the class is a pretty good fit for us...most of the other women said they wanted to try to go without drugs, which is what I am hoping for, too. But basically, I just really don't want to have a c-section, so I'm hoping the class will be of some use with that.

  4. I hear you, Jen. That's why we ended up in our class....I didn't want to subscribe to Bradley or Lamaze or whatever (Hypnobabies, ugh) even though I think they have some useful concepts. I mostly want to learn what I can for coping skills and avoid drugs and unnecessary interventions, although I know you can never plan for everything. I'd love to avoid a c-section, too!!!

  5. have you read the book "Pushed" by Jennifer Block? I really enjoyed it (although she doesn't really address high risk babies), it's a very eye-opening account of the state of birth-care in the US. check it out! -clare

  6. I haven't read that book, clare, but I am aware of the issues with how the U.S. medical system handles births. Luckily, UCSF hospital is pretty progressive and has a low (but still too high) c-section rate.
